Book launch day: One for Sorrow

The new psychological thriller

By D.G. Torrens

Chapter Nine

Willow attempted calling Avery, to no avail. Once again, she left a long message. Furious, she turned to her sister. “I have barely seen her this week. We were supposed to meet up Thursday at the Renaissance Bar in town to celebrate my last day at work and she didn’t show. Avery knew full well I needed her support. She has returned none of my messages. There’s no excuse for this, Lucy.”

“That doesn’t sound like Avery. I’m guessing she has gotten all caught up in the romance of it all. You know what new love feels like. It consumes you in the beginning. Well, just imagine how it feels for Avery. She has never been in love, let alone had a meaningful relationship. It’s fair to say Ethan has swept her off her feet.”

Willow huffed. “Literally!” she retorted.

Lucy raised her brow. “Stop stressing. Avery will come back down to earth before long.”

Willow’s phone vibrated in her pocket. She retrieved it, gasped, and glanced at Lucy in shock. “It’s Avery!”

She swiped to answer. “Where the hell have you been?” demanded Willow.

“I’m so sorry. Ethan whisked me away on our third date for a few days. We spent the first night at his house and then we drove out to a beautiful lakeside lodge at Wicker’s Forest. I lost my phone and couldn’t make calls.”

“You could have used Ethan’s phone to call me, or did you forget about meeting me on Thursday?”

“Oh, no…I’m so sorry. It escaped my mind. There is no excuse, Willow. Again, I’m sorry. I will make it up to you. I thought about using Ethan’s phone to call you, but I didn’t know your number. Ridiculous as it sounds, I never have to physically type your number. It’s stored in my contacts. I just tap your name.”

“I get that. I don’t know anyone’s number off by heart either. I could not recite yours if I needed to.”

“Don’t worry about it. I was just worried about you. It was so unlike you, that’s all.”

“I understand. Ethan has consumed me, Willow. He wants to make the most of our time together before I leave for work in a few days. We have spent most days together. I think he is the one!”

“Seriously?”

“Yes, I just know it.”

Willow chimed in. “But it’s only been eight days! Things are moving fast. Well, all that matters is that you’re happy. So did you find your phone in the end?” “Weirdly, Ethan found it on the floor under the back seat of the car this morning. I don’t know how it got there.
