…“He’s gone again,” my daughter said and sobbed. “He’s gone.” Isolina continued to weep as I vanished with a puff of smoke into the wind, but my son—my glorious, brilliant, beautiful Lopaka—didn’t even look up into the clouds for me.
Not once.
He had no thought for how much it hurt my physical body…for my soul to leave the Earth. I had just died, in every real sense, even though my spirit was simply on borrowed time, soon to reunite with my body, waiting for me on Goddess Pele’s beloved volcanic rim. Lopaka rushed to pick up his son, Little Kimo, who thought the whole Huna trial, the flames, the fire, the ghostly ancestors, the subterfuge were all a big adventure.
“Mama, that was fun!” he shouted as Lopaka ran to him. My son’s husband, Kimo, acknowledged me. For a moment, his deep black eyes held mine, and he raised a hand to me in thanks. There was something there in his gaze…I couldn’t pinpoint it at first, but I know now he realized it before I did. I read it in his face. This had cost me a lot, defending my son, defying a sacred tradition.
“You have to leave them now. You have to say goodbye.” The disembodied voice that had accompanied me since the
moment I received the first message, since the first scent of the Kona Wind, grew stronger. At times it appeared to be a woman’s voice, at other times a man. It wavered and rippled like a brook over pebbles, but now the voice grew stronger.
I shook my head. I was still getting used to the separation of my body and spirit. I knew my body waited on Earth for me, but I needed Lopaka to know I was here for him. That I was but a mere thought away…
