Two for Joy

Your morning coffee and reading from the latest book

By D.G. Torrens

The café door chimed softly as she stepped out into the bustling street. Closing her eyes, Verity savoured the aroma of coffee emerging from her cup like a whispered promise, and collided with a man in her path.

Verity’s latte crashed to the ground. She looked up into the green eyes of the towering man. Her eyes traced his athletic form, noting the thick brown hair that fell across one eye. He hurriedly pulled a tissue from his laptop bag and extended it toward her. “I’m so sorry!” he apologised.

Verity accepted the tissue, wiping down her jacket. “No, no,” she reassured him. “It’s my fault—I wasn’t paying attention.”

An awkward silence hung in the air. Tucking the tissue into her bag, Verity smiled. “Thanks for this. I’ll definitely be more careful next time. By the way, my name’s Verity.”

“Nice to meet you, Verity. You can call me Jasper.”

Verity repeated his name, liking the sound of it. “Jasper,” she said. “Well, I better get going.”

As Verity walked on, Jasper smiled and headed into the coffee shop. Jack stood at the top of the cellar stairs.

“Be with you shortly, Jasper. Rushed off my feet today. Maggie is down the cellar,” he said as he returned to the counter. “I caught your brief encounter outside the shop! Coffee spilt on a beautiful woman. You should have offered to buy her a fresh one.”

Jasper rolled his eyes. “Leave off, Jack! You know I don’t have time for women right now. Besides, she was in a hurry.”
Jack leaned across the counter and whispered, “Her name is Verity, in case you run into her again. She’s new in town,” Jack winked.

Jasper repeated, “Like I said, not interested. Now where’s my coffee?”

“A couple of minutes,” Jack said, nodding toward the queue in front of Jasper. “Take a seat, Jasper, and I’ll bring your coffee over when I’m done serving this lot,” suggested Jack.

Jasper smiled. “No rush. Take your time.” Jack and his wife, Maggie, had owned and run the Coffee Lounge together for over 20 years. Jasper had noticed how Jack seemed to move more slowly than he used to. But Jasper knew Jack would shut down instantly any suggestion to slow down.

Jasper nodded, stepped out of the queue, and took up his usual position in his favourite corner by the window. One of Jack’s favourite customers, Jasper stopped into The Coffee Lounge most days on his way to the office. Jack and Maggie were like family to Jasper, and they treated him like the son they never had. On weekends, Jasper would bring his two dogs with him and sit outside drinking his coffee before taking his pets on a long hike.
